POSTCARDS FORM NO MAN’S LAND
PROMOTING TEEN LITERATURE
Cagliari 13-14 November 2009
Over dinner at the end of my visit to Cagliari about a year ago, with Luciano Marrocu, then the President's counsellor for culture, and Esther Grandesso, then head of the children's library in Cagliari, Luciano asked what they should do next in their work with young people and reading. I suggested they should bring together teachers and school librarians, not only from Sardinia but from all over Italy, for a conference on the promotion of books to young people, and to discuss the place and importance of libraries in schools.
Luciano was enthusiastic and so was Esther. What I didn't expect is that they would ask me to help to plan the conference and to take part in it. But how could I refuse? I've enjoyed all my visits to Cagliari, a beautiful town full of fascinating history, and people who have been generous to me. So here we are, the conference planned and ready to go ahead. I'm looking forward to it eagerly.
Best wishes,
Aidan Cahambers
